CHARACTER INFORMATION

NAME: Fai (Yuui) D. Flourite
CANON: Tsubasa Chronicle
CANON POINT: Post celebration on Piffle World, just before going to LeCourt
AGE: Looks to be in his twenties, but is at least a few hundred years old.

HISTORY: Wiki Link.. Please note that they use "Flowright" on this page for his last name, and even "Fay" for his first name in some places. But I am going with the official Del Rey translation of "Fai Flourite"

PAST GAME MEMORIES: N/A

PERSONALITY:
When we first see Fai, he appears very playful and even happy. However, this is just a mask that is given for a variety of reasons - for his mission, and to avoid getting close to anyone primarily. He's in the mindset that he might have to kill anyone to revive his brother, after all, and he's doing his best to prepare himself for that. His mask is there to not blow his cover and to keep his distance. He even states himself that he had no intention of getting close to anyone the way he ended up doing.

The mask provides an additional cover to hide just how devastated he is. In reviews of his time in Celes, Fai is particularly serious and very sad. Though he did smile in Celes, it was also an attempt to cheer others up, especially Ashura-ou. But, with his brother dead, and the promise of having to kill Ashura-ou looming over him, he runs from his problems to try and complete his mission in the hopes of reviving his brother and to never have to kill Ashura-ou, as he cares for both of them so very much. Covering it up with a playful demeanour means that he hopes no one will notice or even ask about his personal pains.

Because of this mask and his mission, Fai quickly turns to lying at every chance he would rather not talk about it. He allows diversions to interfere and will avoid topics and give supplemental information if possible. His lies are often not well-constructed however, and many holes can be found upon looking more closely at them. Kurogane seems to notice this frequently about him, though often doesn't comment on it until later on. Fai learns to construct these lies without providing any proper backup for them, which shows his inexperience in doing such things. Although Fai in his natural element isn't necessarily straightforward, he was only more withdrawn in Celes but would provide truths as asked for them instead of always dodging the question.

Fai also lies frequently about his abilities and knowledge. Early on, he claims his magic isn't powerful, and then that the tattoo he gave Yuuko means he cannot perform magic anymore, and then he keeps altering those claims as each of them keep quickly being proven incorrect, and Fai can be seen half-stumbling over each of these reveals as he just gives a casual shrug and dismissal. He claims his abilities are usually intuition, and does his best to come acrost as otherwise useless to those around him. Again, this facade relates to the need to have a cover. However, his hesitation to use magic stems from the lack of the tattoo on his back, meant to keep his magic in check with the promise he gave Ashura-ou. Fai also claims to not be able to whistle, so he will often say "Weet-woo" or "Hyuu" to mimic the sound. However, Fai's whistle also carries a high level of magic, and that's why he doesn't whistle.

Oddly enough, it's a little difficult to tell if Fai really starts his journey with no intention of dying. After all, the mage states that he has no intention of dying himself, and later on, it's said out loud that he won't die until he gives his brother's life back to him. But at the same time, Fai doesn't use his magic to defend himself, leading to others having to save him from time to time when he miscalculates a judgement of a person or situation. And Kurogane calls him out on this, with little more response than a shrug. Fai probably walks on the razor's edge of surviving to fulfill his promise, or just succumbing to death and ending his string of curses. Additionally, Kurogane points out that it's not that Fai "won't" die, but because he "can't". And so, it may be more likely that Fai is simply banking on that and just succumbing to hardly living at all while he just tries to get through this mission.

Fai starts teasing Kurogane pretty much right away, perhaps because he knows he may have to kill him down the road and thus tries to use it to keep distance between them, or because Kurogane is so uptight, and it may even be possibly due to both of these reasons. Whatever the reason or combination thereof, Fai's teasing of Kurogane is pretty relentless, and starts off by calling Kurogane "Mr. Black", even though he gets corrected. And then he alters to calling Kurogane by childish nicknames such as "Kuro-rin", "Kuro-tan", etc. When in Outo, Kurogane says the stupid names that Fai called him before "Big Puppy" were better, and Fai asks which one he likes best, starting to list them off happily. He'll even pick on Kurogane's circumstances, such as Tomoyo sending him to the witch; "You did something bad and she did it to scold you~". It makes Fai's teasing even more interesting, because he doesn't know how to use chopsticks himself, yet he will make fun of Kurogane's skills with using silverware. He even tricks Kurogane to eat by pulling simple tricks to get Kurogane to look at him with his guard lowered.

Fai does expect to agitate the ninja, and to be attacked in return, and is thus prepared to playfully run away or defend himself. If anything, he appears to antagonize the ninja because it's easy to get such a rile out of him. He even says later that he finds Kurogane's impatience cute. Fai also mock-complains when Kurogane is mean, such as when Kurogane had to save Fai from the Kiishimu. When Kurogane retorts that the acid would have burnt him if he didn't smack Fai out of the way, Fai continues by saying that Kurogane could have done it in a nicer way. He tends to volunteer Kurogane into many situations, be it being just a supportive presence, to the manpower that gets them all through, or even appointing him as the Team Dad. He even makes Kurogane their personal bodyguard at one point by telling people who believe that Sakura is cheating to direct their questions to Kurogane.

Fai is also particularly polite by default. He treats most others, and even especially women, with respect and courtesy. He'll even bow and escort as he feels is needed. He would rather avoid conflict that he feels don't deserve it, and even his self-defense measures usually go out of his way to not try to cause harm to them as he dodges away. He also always seems to be grateful for others' generosities and will put in efforts to repay them, though he won't turn down a kindness that asks for no repayment either. Fai will often be the one to give proper introductions of the group, along with Mokona. Fai's actions and reactions often reflect that he treats others much better than himself, and that he would rather their safety be guaranteed over his own as long as it's possible to do so.

Fai also tends to show an interesting level of laziness. He has Kurogane repair Chunhyang's broken ceiling while he sits there chatting and drinking tea. Though that may be simply to just tease Kurogane further as well. But he finds himself looking for "easy work while gathering information" in Outo, claiming that he "can't always stay on the knife's edge." He does show a preference for relaxing whenever he is able. And with this, Fai has a special fondness for alcohol. Though in Outo, his reactions were more "programmed" with him obsessively meowing, and appearing to be completely smashed, with a hangover to follow the next morning, in the real world, he seems able to keep drinking alcohol with little consequence, and enjoys it when the flavour of the alcohol is particularly good. We see in a former interaction on Celes with Ashura-ou that Fai seems to love alcohol even more than food. And he certainly won't turn down drinking in a relaxed setting.

Fai seems to have an affinity and appreciation for cooking. He claims that it's like mixing a potion for magic, so it comes easily to him. He tends to pour alot of care into the foods he makes and uses it to take care of the others. However, Fai does not appreciate sour foods in the slightest, and outright refuses to eat it when offered to him, as shown in Nirai Kanai when Kurogane tries to feed him Nukazuke. Fai visibly twists away from it and makes a rather unpleasant face along with whining.

Although Fai fights to remain distant from the group, he does warm up to them and even comes to dote on them. He does his best to make sure everyone is taken care of and, if they are not happy, he will offer steps to help them become happy, even if it's just for a moment at a time. He doesn't wish his sadness on others, and it shows the more it grows. He adores the Hell out of Sakura and even offers to become her servant in this quest, becoming extremely concerned when she faces danger. He gives Syaoran words of encouragement and tries to help him take it easy. He supports Kurogane from the sidelines, knowing that is what he prefers. Fai tailors his supports to the person that he is giving them to at the time. He does his best to read that person's needs and gives the best that he can offer at the time.

Fai is also particularly observant, often seeing and understanding how a person feels without needing a thorough explanation, though he might play it off as though he is ignorant of it. He tends to admit out loud what he finds to be particularly impressive about others, and seems to be sincere about it, such as Syaoran's bluntness or Kurogane's skills. Kurogane says that Fai has a face that says, "Ignore me, I'm a fool," but he can see right through it. He also believes it takes a certain kind of strength to be able to cry when you should, showing he's empathetic. He encourages Syaoran to be happy and smile, because he might not always get those moments, and that he might become sad all of the time if he doesn't take those moments to smile. He even tells Sakura that if she wishes to help Syaoran, her smile is the best thing for him. Fai tends to give rather solid counseling advice to the party in ways such as this, in the hopes to encourage a smoother trip, and a happier team.

Fai comes to love the children, Mokona, and Kurogane, and is even willing to give his life for them at a moment's notice. It destroys him from the inside when he kills Sakura, making him turn the blade upon himself. He hates losing any of the children, clones or originals, and will outright defend them with all that he's got. And though Kurogane is thoroughly capable of defending himself and making his own decisions, Fai tells him to leave him behind on Celes so that the ninja can get out alive. And, after the events of Celes, he starts fighting to live because of these people. They mean all of the worlds to him, and he will use all of his power to keep them safe. These people make the difference to Fai he has never had in his life before - a reason to love, and therefore a reason to live. Because Fai no longer feels like a burden, but instead as something of value to the others, his outlook begins to change on himself.

Especially after Fei Wang's death, Fai's confidence seems to begin to solidify. His sincerity shows, and he becomes genuinely happy. He makes more bold statements, and his teasing of Kurogane becomes stronger than ever, especially if it's to help keep the ninja from doing anything foolish. But that teasing is also more compassionate and shows that he worries for Kurogane's wellbeing, and doting in his own way. Fai stops dodging his way around life, and becomes more direct, enjoying each moment even more than before. Undoubtedly, he loves to have fun, and any prospect of it thrills him. When the spirits come to whisk them away to see the Princes Goddess, he treats it as though they are going on a roller coaster.

He doesn't even hesitate to use his magic anymore, especially if it means it will help someone out, and even more so if it is one of his group. His friendliness is more genuine and warm; although he will still be wary of people he can't read the intentions of, such as the guardians of the Goddess Princess in Nirai Kanai. He still treated them kindly, but it was similar to the facade at the beginning of the journey, knowing that the guardians did not trust their group to not cause harm.

Overall, Fai is genuinely a warm, caring, even motherly individual by nature. But it takes an entire journey of regret and others coming to care for him to show him that he's not a curse just for merely existing. He'll dote on the others, and tease Kurogane, at every chance he gets and is there for them to be any kind of support they could possibly need, even if it's only a little. He cares, and after the events of Celes, he goes out of his way to show that he cares and to protect at all costs the new "family" he has come to call his own. Following them to the ends of the various worlds is not a problem for him, and he loves sharing the moments of happiness with them. To them, he is worth something, and there he finds his own self-worth. He found acceptance that he couldn't find in his homeworlds, and that has made all of the difference to him.

POWERS/ABILITIES:
NOTE: Headanon abilities are in italics.

MAGICAL ABILITIES - As a wizard worthy of the D. title, Fai has a vast expansion of magical skills. Also, it is mentioned in canon that Fai has been able to learn most magics just by studying and practice alone. However, despite his efforts, Fai is unable to learn healing magic.

  • Interdimensional travel: Fai has the ability to cross dimensions and worlds, and the ability to do so multiple times. This is considered extremely powerful magic and can only usually be performed once by most individuals, marking Fai's power as a D-level Wizard. Even Mokona compares the skill to their own, meaning he doesn't need the Witch's help to cross dimensions. However, it does have its limitations. A limit on his magic, such as when his power is halved from his missing eye, means he will require an outside source of power to complete the spell when sending multiple people. Also, performing the spell too many times in a small timeframe will also exhaust this ability until he is given time to rest that allows him to replenish his magic uses.

  • Flight: Fai has the ability to fly, float, and dodge in mid-air. This doesn't really seem to have much in the way of limitations and seems to be fairly easy for him to cast at will.

  • Barriers: Fai can cast these to block magic and attacks, usually by scrawling runes in the air. However, when this is done by whistling, it also creates something of a pocket dimension where he can willingly allow one to cast a spell that would normally be blocked by their surroundings (such is seen in Lecourt, where he does so to let Mokona warp them to another world in their escape). It would be easy to assume that he could probably suppress magical powers in a similar manner as well, so long as he is more powerful than they are.

  • Transmutation: Fai is able to alter the appearances of given objects, and perhaps give them artificial sentience, such as giving one of Sakura's feather the image of his mother, as well as being able to physically pet her. He alters her form a couple of times in the series, and it seems to take no effort for him to do so, though giving them a sense of "life" probably takes more of his magical ability.

  • Energy Concentration: Fai can shoot concentrated energy blasts in the form of beams, large bursts, or even in a series of rapid-fires. It is probably also safe to assume that he can use concentrated energy to create light and a heat source.

  • Illusions: It is probably safe to assume that Fai can perform some degree of illusion magic. From creating tricks of the light, to making it appear as though someone is in the area. Although, illusions might not be interactive and do not necessarily come with a sound function.

  • Ice Element: Given to the environment he grew up in, Fai can cast magic that will create ice and snow, from flurries to ice crystals and pyres.

MAGICAL KNOWLEDGE AND INSIGHT - Fai has been able to study magic to a very in-depth level, ever since he was a child.

  • Potions: Fai mentions more than once a proficiency in mixing potions. Though in what is never specified. It is, however, clear that he cannot perform any healing types of magic, and so potions are probably limited to that by extension as well.

  • Sense Magic: Fai is able to detect and pinpoint magic; the stronger the magic, the easier it is for him to sense, making him able to detect extremely powerful persons and objects. He does not seem to be able to sense Sakura's feathers, but is able to find most other things based on this perception ability.

  • Disperse Magic: Due to Fai's extensive studies, he is able to determine the type of spell being used and disperse it with ease, and not necessarily through his own magical means. He can find the reason a spell works and remove one a portion of what keeps it functioning and thus disarm it, such as moving the bookcase in Lecourt.

  • Complex Spell Requirements: Fai has a very thorough knowledge of how spells work, and what problems they can invoke when casting them. One such instance is knowing that a locator spell will reveal the caster's location to the other party.

CURSES - Fai undergoes the process of a few curses, thanks to Fei Wang Reed.

  • Stronger Than You: Fai is fated to kill the first person he comes acrost, in person, that possesses stronger magical ability than he does. It was initially built for when he met O!Syaoran, but it's C!Sakura's collected feathers that triggers it first.

  • Erase the World: Upon his return to the world of Celes, should he fail to kill Ashura-ou with his own two hands, Fai's magic will activate to destroy Celes, leaving him without enough magic to transport everyone to safety. This was meant to make it so the only ones who could escape would be Sakura's body and one other person.

  • Tattoo Loophole: In Ashura-ou's hopes to spare Fai the pain of both of his curses, Ashura-ou gives him a tattoo that limits the growth of Fai's magical abilities, so that when Ashura-ou becomes stronger than Fai, Fai will be forced to kill him instead.

PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES - While Fai's preferred methods lie in magic use, he does have a few physical skills in his favour. However, Fai is something of a glass cannon, and even states that it would not take much in the way of physical blows to take him out.

  • Hand-to-hand Combat: Fai can actually swing a punch and is particularly agile in his skills. While he'd rather do no damage at all in an ideal situation, he is able to land very strong blows.

  • Cooking: Fai is quite skilled at cooking, claiming it is similar to creating magical potions. He seems to have no issues cooking any manner of food in any particular style.

  • Drawing: Fai is able to draw particularly well and enjoys drawing cutesy pictures. Whether this is due to a spell cast by magic, or because he learned to draw through writing magical runes is not particularly specified. Though, it's probably safe to assume the latter.

  • Longevity: Due to his skills as a wizard, Fai's life expectancy is extremely high. Although there is no given limit on how many years he has, he is probably about 1/5 of the way through his lifespan, via his physical appearance combined with how many years he has lived already. He could potentially live for 1000+ years.

VAMPIRISM - Fai undergoes a temporary transformation into being a vampire, in order to preserve his life. However, the vampire blood becomes neutralised after he regains his full magical power.

  • Prolonged Longevity: Fai already has a long lifespan due to his magic. Being a vampire expands it a little longer, due to the lifespans the vampires have.

  • Claws: Fai is able to expand and retract his nails into long claws that act as sharp as blades.

  • Rapid Healing: Because of the vampire blood, and damage done to him usually means he can recover quickly. He is not immortal, but it becomes much more difficult to kill him from blows that would otherwise be fatal to the average person.

  • Blood Drinking: The typical "perk" of being a vampire is needing blood to survive. Thanks to a blending of blood between the vampires and Kurogane, Kurogane is the only source he can take that blood from.

ANYTHING ELSE? Just a strong suggestion to probably remove the curses. Y'know, to prevent anyone being killed. Especially since we're surrounded by fairies suppressing powers here. Suppress Fai's powers and Anyone With Magic Power Might Be Stronger Than Him.
